Leaf Windows

Leaf windows are specialized leaf structures specific to some plants. They are translucent structures on the outside of the leaves that allow sunlight to penetrate the outer leaf before reaching the chlorophyll that photosynthesizes the light into nutrition for the plant. Leaf windows serve to increase the rate of energy absorption and photosynthesis. Leaf windows are typically found on plants that grow partially buried under the soil to protect the plant from sunburn and desiccation in hot, dry climates.
